Among the rocky folds of Sicily's north-western coast, nestled between Castellammare del Golfo and San Vito Lo Capo, lies one of the island's most authentic wonders: the Zingaro Oriented Nature Reserve. Seven kilometres of unspoilt coastline, beaten by the wind and caressed by a clear sea that seems to have come straight out of a summer dream.
For those who really want to unplug and immerse themselves in a nature that doesn't cut corners but offers real emotions, it is hard to think of a better place. Whether you are a trekking enthusiast, a lover of nature photography or simply in search of quiet coves where you can lay out your towel, the Zingaro has something to offer.
Paths lost in the maquis
The reserve is a network of routes, from the most accessible to those for experienced hikers. They all pass through a landscape that changes with the light of day: dwarf palms, broom, carob and wild olive trees accompany the walk, while hawks and herring gulls often appear from the sky.
Among the most popular trails, it is worth mentioning:
- The coastal path, definitely the most scenic, runs flush with the water and connects the main coves.
- The Mid-Coast Patha little more strenuous but ideal for those seeking dramatic views and a dash of adventure.
- The High Pathrecommended only for experts, is a real challenge that pays off with spectacular views of the peaks and the sea.
Hidden coves where time slows down
The beauty of the Reserve is also hidden in its inlets, which can only be reached on foot or by sea. Some seem to have slipped out of a postcard:
- Cala dell'Uzzofamous among snorkellers, with seabeds that look like paintings.
- Cala Marinella, collected and perfect for stopping to breathe.
- Berretta Cove e Cala Capreriawhere silence reigns and the water welcomes you unhurriedly.
When to go: the right time to discover it
The best season? Hard to say, but between April and June is perhaps the best: few tourists, gentle climate, flowers everywhere. July and August offer warm sea and endless days, but it is best to leave at dawn and not forget the water.
Small tips for enjoying the experience
- You don't go in a car: you walk, and a lot. Better comfortable shoes.
- Light but well-stocked backpack: water, something to munch on, sunscreen.
- No bars, restaurants or shops: here, nature dictates the rules.
How to get there
There are two main entrances: to the south from Scopello (about 20 minutes from Castellammare del Golfo), with car parks nearby, and to the north, just outside San Vito Lo Capo. In both cases, you walk from the entrance.
If you are thinking of a Sicilian holiday with soul, mark this name in your diary. The Zingaro Nature Reserve is not just a place to see, but an experience you will carry with you for a long time, like salt on your skin after a dip.
